WAGES DISPUTE,

ABORTIVE CONFERENCE

A conference between local and district flaxmillers and the Employees’ Union was held this morning discuss the deadlock which has arisen over the wages dispute. The Press were not admitted, but Mr P. T. Robinson, secretary of the union, later informed a “Standard” reporter that the meeting had been abortive and that the dispute would now be brought before. the Arbitration Court at Wellington on November 16. It was stated that the employers wanted a straight-out reduction of 10 per cent, until flax reaches £27 10s per tdn. The union’s request was for a sliding scale of wages as suggested by Mr Clinkard, of the Department of Industry and Commerce.
