MA RTON SPRING MEETING

OPENING OF NEW COURSE.

ROYAL MINT WINS BIG EVENT. HUIKAI TAKES THE SPRINT. Contrary to expectations, tlie Marton Jockey Club was favoured by brilliant conditions for the first day of its spring meeting held on the new course yesterday when there was a large representative crowd in attendance to mark the auspicious occasion. The improvement scheme, by virtue of its elaborate nature, was very favourably commented upon, the magnificent stand accommodation being in itself far in advance of present demands and it should meet the club’s needs for many years to come.

The ..course was naturally heavy, Marton having, unfortunately, been within the range of Wednesday’s electrcal storm. Nevertheless, fields of fair strength were the order of the day and very excellent racing was witnessed. The Marton Handicap was annexed by Royal Mint, the Taranaki representative prevailing over the dual performer Nukumai, who was the public’s first fancy, in good style, _ while the sprint honours fell to Huikai, with Beaumont in second placing, Foxton stables thus furnishing the runners-up in the two big events for the day. The shortage of money for specullative purposes was reflected in the slightly reduced totalisator figures, the sum of £16,580 being handled for the day as compared with £17,339 for the opening day at Feilding last year—a reduction of £759, which can well be termed highly satisfactory. The conduct of the fixture was quite on a par with its usual excellence, while only one matter of a minor nature necessitated action by the stipendiary stewards. AN AWAPUNI SUCCESS. The field in the Trial Plate—the opening event—was reduced to a “baker’s dozen”, by the defection of Aropeta, Mussie, Itoyal Black, Fee Simple and Gold Cure. The Trentham candidate Vigilance wound up favourite in a small betting pool, Aro de Val and Wild Pigeon being the only other runners to be entrusted with over 2DO tickets. Cione, who had drawn an inside position, was slow to move, Heloiis being the early leader from Blimp, Tanagra, Vigilance and Taurimu. Rounding the turn for home Tanagra had moved in behind Helotis with Blimp, Aro de Val and Plane next. With heads straightened, Blimp went to the front and was never sen-

ously challenged to win by throe lengths with Tanagra two * lengths away, a head in front of Wild Pigeon who came strongly from the distance. GOOD FAVOURITE BEATEN. The scratching pen was very much in evidence in tlie First Hack Hurdles, Red Fuchsia, Arataura, All Wind, Hangawera, Wailong, Royal Day and Paddy’ Hope being numbered among the missing. Peneus was sent out a warm order, the Boniform gelding carrying twice as much as Pesliwa, the second elect, with Ramblin’ Kid but two tickets further back in the markot. Miss Potoa jumped to the front from the barrier rise, Ramblin’ Kid and Break o’Day being next in attendance with Pesliwa. Entering the straight on the first timo round Ramblin’ Kid had taken charge from Miss Potoa with Jovial, Break o’Day, Pesliwa and Peneus at close intervals Entering the back, Jovial opened up a gap from Ramblin’ Kid with Peneus and Peshwa together ahead of Break o’Day. By the time the entrance was reached Peshwa had joined Jovial with Peneus two lengths back. The two leaders took the final fence together and although he was tiring fast, Peshwa went on to win by a length from Jovial with Peneus three lengths away. Taitaiata got up in time to beat Ramblin’ Kid for fourth place. CLOSEFIRE IN FORM.

Boy was a matter of five tickets better fancied for the Spring Hack Handicap than Grand National, with a drop of 133 tickets to Closefire, Teri, Great Day, Troilus and San Pedro being the defections from the event. The favourite was smartest to begin from Red Comet, Grand National, The Curragli and Tintoretto, but going away from

home Red Comet dashed to the front to open up a six lengths break from The Curragh and Boy, with 'Tinterctto and Grand National next. Rounding the turn Closefire and Boy closed on the pacemaker and, with the serious business entered upon, Closefire finished full of running t6' stall off Boy and win by three lengths with Radiate, vvho finished with a rattle on the outside, a length away. Then came Tintoretto, Koauau and Red Comet, the last named having stopped badly. ROYAL MINT WINS WELL. A field of nine runners went out to contest the big flat event for the day—the Marton Handicap—Te Monanui, Mint Leaf, Vivo and Killoch having declined their engagements. Nukumai was elected to the post of favourite, the Manchineel gelding being entrusted with £l3B more than Alloway, with Royal Mint a further £149 lesser fancied. The favourite was slow to move, Star Area showing the way past the stands to Starboard Light, Alloway and Royal Mint, with Nukumai in the rear, the other runners being well bunched. Going away from home Starboard Light was rushed to the front to open up a big break along the back from Star Area, Alloway and Royal Mint. Half a mile from home the favourite commenced to go through his field. Mount Marta also making a forward move, but almost immediately Royal Mint and Alloway joined issue. Nukumai and Royal Mint were actually in front at the straight entrance, but the latter immediately went to the front from Nukumai with Alloway and Tame Fox in hot pursuit, while Tresham came with a late effort. Royal Mint, however was never troubled to win by three lengths, Nukumai being a length clear of Tresham with a similar gap to Tame Fox and Alloway who finished almost on terms. HUNT STEEPLECHASE. The original field of 14 runners in the Hunt Cup Steeplechase was reduced to nine by the withdrawal of Franfeldt, Atene, Maidos, Ruby. Ring and Panchito. Banjuko was sent out favourite, a matter of 27 tickets separating the Bisogne gelding from Handy, with Oiieroa £7B lesser fancied. Handy jumped to the front immediately the barrier rose with Birdie and Ban juke next. At the first fence Risk came to grief, whilo at the next Buckeye likewise retired from the contest through making a mistake. Passing through the straight Handy was still in the van from Oneroa and Banjuke and, Rayo running off at the double, tiro trio were left well clear of Birkenose. They raced at two and three length intervals going along the back, but the field closed approaching the outside stand on the second circuit. Handy again went away, although Banjuke and Oneroa wore still well up, Birkenose having commenced to drift. With the final fence negotiated Handy drew out to win nicely by four lengths from Banjuko with a gap of 15 lengths to Oneroa. A furlong back came Birkenose, the only other runner to finish. Rayo re-jumped the stand fence he had run off at, but repeated the performance at his next time round and, together with Birdie and Two-Up, was pulled up. A STIRRING FINISH. Town Bird, together with Lady Limond, Reckless, Marsurd, Sovena, Bronstell and Flying Shot were the absentees from the Electric Hack Handicap and in the absence of the topweight the public sent out Te Kawana, who runs in the same ownership as Town Bird, favourite, the northerner carrying £123 more than Lady Cynthia, with Kalos within four tickets of the Feilding candidate. Volplane was the first to show out at the barrier rise, but immediately gave way to Bank Note and Miss Mercia, Duke Abbey, who had been slow to find his feet, being well back. Rounding the turn for home Bank Note and Miss Mercia were together with Te Kawana . and Lady Cynthia ahead of Chips and Volplane. The race appeared to lie between the two leaders at the distance where Volplane lodged a strong challenge. He did not quite get up to Miss Mercia who secured the verdict by a head with Bank Note a further head away. Then came Te Kawana and Duke Abbey, who finished full of running, Kalos and Wanderlust. HUIKAI EFFECTS SURPRISE. Grand Knight, Degage, Partaga, Starboard Light, Phantasy and Toapaiti declined their engagements in the Railway Handicap, Beaumont being entrusted with £290 as compared with Inner Harbour’s £244 and Miss Hupana’s £222, while In the Shade, Orchid and Hipo all carried oyer £2OO. ■ At- the barrier rise Inner Harbour dashed to the front from Beaumont and Kiosk with a two lengths’ break to Hipo and Miss Hupana. Rounding the turn Kiosk wrested the lead, only to bo joined by Huikai, with Beaumont, Hipo, Orchid and Miss Hupana all in the firing line. In the straight Huikai came away with Beaumont and Hipo in hot pursuit. Tlie leader retained his advantage to win by three parts of a length with Hipo a similar distance behind Beaumont. Then came Royal Land, Cohesion and Miss Hupana. ANOLO’S IMPROVED FORM. Four of. the acceptors in Boy, Te Kawana, Tanagra and Gourmet, three of whom had made earlier appearances, did not go out to fulfill their engagements in the Tutaenui Hack Handicap —the concluding event for the day —a good betting race seeing Rarakau a £l4 better favourite than Anolo, with Bronstell £l2l lesser fancied. Archon, who had drawn the inside position, was the smartest _ to • bc-gm and he led from Mandarin, Anolo, Rarakau, Bronstell and Lady Faye going down the back, Mister Gamp being several lengths back. The only change approaching the turn for home was that Rarakau and Anolo had reversed positions, while rounding the turn Mister Gamp was steadily making up his leeway. Anolo landed first into the straight front Archon, Manadarin and Rarakau and in the run to the post was- never troubled to win by two lengths with a head in front of the fast finishing Mister Gamp, who suffered a block in the straight. Then came Rarakau, Mandarin, Archon and Lady Faye in a bunch. THE DETAILED RUNNERS. TRIAL PLATE, of 110 sovs.; second horse 20 sovs and third 10 sovs. Six furlongs. Weight 8.7. 5 Dr M. G. PONY TRACKS. MAY RING LONDON. LONDON, Aug. 22. “We hope to ring London with pony racing tracks,” a prominent official of the Pony Turf Club told the Sporting Life. '“When the first London course was thoroughly established it was proposed to build further courses at Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, Bradford, and Leeds, and in the populous Midland districts. It is aimed to make pony racing cheaper than horses, establishing the same popular basis as in Sydney and Melbourne. Lord Derby as patron has much to do with the formation of the governing body. The stewards will include Lord Lascelles, Lord Carnarvon and numbers of many of England’s most prominent racegoers.
