RONGOTEA NOTES.

ENGINE BREAKS DOWN. [From Our Own Correspondent.] On Thursday and Friday evenings, tho local butter fuctory was a scene ot activity. I lie factory authorities experienced a good deal of inconvenience when the engine, which has been in use for some 16 years, began to fail on Thursday, and it was decided to endeavour to rectify the trouble in the evening. However, success did not reward their efforts, as was apparent when an attempt to start tho engine next morning failed, and it was not until four o’clock in the afternoon before a start was inado to put through tho cream. It was found necessary, owing to the unfortunate breakdown, and Urn °loss of time in carrying out tho usual routine of the factory, to have a full staff (including the secretary) working und completed their duties about 11 o’clock in the evening. Mr T. McGee, tho engineer, i 3 at present away on holiday. NOTES. Mr T. Flannagan the Wanganui Education Board’s works overseer, is at present engaged with his staff in orecting a “diamond'’ railed fence along the entire front boundary -of the school grounds. Mr L. Ross is at present in hospital, where he has just undergone an operation. It is the sincere hope 01 his many friends and his fellow-workers that he will make a speedy recovery. An enjoyablo evening was spent last week when a surprise parly consisting of Messrs T. Rose, R. and E. Aird, G. Cowan, K. McWatters, C. McCall and Mesdames F. McGee and L. Meiles visited Mr and Mrs Blaxland. The usual indoor games were played, also some unique competitions were indulged in. Considerable interest was taken in a competition in which 50 advertisements, which had previously been dipped from the “Standard,” were pinned on the walls of the room with the advertisers’ names omitted. Tho object was to guess the advertisers. Tho competition resulted in a tie between Messrs C. Cowan and C. McCall. Items were rendered by Mrs J. Blaxland (vocal solo), Mrs L. Meiles (monologue), Mr C. Cowan (recitation) and Mr R. Aird (solo). After a delightful supper dancing was indulged in and a very enjoyablo evening ended wit** a “community sing.”
