MANAWATU CLUB’S MEETING
CHAMPIONS COMPETE. Attracted by the presence of several cycling champions, including R. W. Lamb, tire Victorian record-breaker, there was an attendance of several hundred spectators at the Showgrounds this afternoon' for the sports meeting conducted by tho Manawatu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club. Weather conditions were not promising at the commencement; the sky was overcast and there was promise of early rain, while a breeze of considerable velocity was blowing. Tho 'programme of events was really a restricted one, cycling races forming the major portion 'of tire afternoon’s entertainment. Therein there competed besides Lamb the best of New Zealand’s riders, including F. J. Grose, of Christchurch, the 17-year-old New Zealand mile champion, of whom much is expected, and T. Oakley, of Masterton, a former Dominion champion. Although there were so many events for cyclists, the runners were not neglected, being catered for with four events, in which many wellknown performers competed. A prompt start was made with the programme, and, despite the fact that many of the events had to bo got off in heats, there was no time'lost, the conduct of the meeting reflecting credit on the club. Hardy; megaphone steward, Mr J. Fahey ; result hoard steward, Mr C. Burgess; marksmen, cycling, Messrs A. J. Tait, G. E. Cooksley; athletics Mr R. V. Mason; cycling steward, Mr J. A. Cooksley (local officer); call stewards, Messrs C. L. Turnbull, H. Thompson; lap stewards, Messrs K. Glendinning, M. Comber; programmes, Mr E. S. C. Hubbard; handicappers, athletics, Mr T. Stubbs, cycling, J. A. Cooksley; starter, Mr F. W. Aisher; survey stewards, Messrs E. N. Persson and G. S. Leeder. Mr F. C. Elgar capably carried out the secretarial duties. Results of events decided up to the time of going to press were as follow : Half-mile cycle handicap. First heat: J. Hanley (Manawatu) 50yds 1, S. R. Spiers (Manawatu) 40yds 2, R. W. Lamb (Australia) scr 3; time, linin 11 l-ssec. Won by four lengths, with inches between second and third, Spiers and Lamb fighting every inch of the straight together and the local lad getting homo first. Four starters. Second heat: M. Donald (Manawatu) 55yds 1, 0. W. Prouse (Manawatu) 70yds 2, F. J. Grose (Christchurch) scr 3; time, lmin 11 l-ssec. Won by four lengths, with a similar distance between second and third. Four starters. Third heat: T. Oakley (Masterton) scr 1, F. Powell (Manawatu) 25yds 2; time, lmin losec. Won by a yard. D. McFedries (Wellington) 15 yards, the only other "starter, did not finish. Final: Hanley 1, Donald 2, Prouse 3; time, lmin Usee. . Won by four lengths, with two between second and third. Lamb was fourth, inches away, while Oakley was fifth, a length further back. Grose did not start. One mile cycle handicap.— First heat: E. Anderson (Feilding) 110yds 1, F. G. Grose (Christchurch) scr 2, O. W. Prouse (Manawatu) 100yds 3, time 2min. 35 2-osecs. Won by five lengths, with a foot between second and third. Five starters. Second heat: T. Oakley (Masterton) scr. 1, R. W. Lamb (Australia) scr 2, W. Hunter (Hastings) 25yds 3; time, 2min. 41sec. Won by two lengths, with a length between second and third. Six starters. Final: Anderson 1, Hunter 2, Oakley 3; time, 2min. 38secs. Won by ten lengths, with five between second and third. Lamb did not start, while Grose pulled out in the last lap. 100 yards handicap.—First heat: D. M. Hoult (Dannevirke) B|vds and T. R. Mexted (Pahiatua) 12yds, equal, 1, J. E. Rosoman (Feilding) 6} yds 3, time, 10 3-ssec. A good finish. Six starters. Second heat: L. Cockery (Manawatu) Byds 1, G. W. Knox (Marten) 7yds 2, T. 11. Preston (Mar-1 ton) 7yds 3;'tirne, 10 2-ssec. Won by two feet, with a similar distance between second and third. Only starters. Final: Hoult 1, Rosoman 2, Cockery and Mexted, equal, third; time, 10 2-ssec. A good finish, inches separating tho placed competitors.
