ADVERTISING POLICY.

ELECTRICAL POWER BOARDS

ADDRESS 'TO CONFERENCE

Addressing tire annual conference this morning of the power board secretaries and executive officers of New Zealand on the subject of power board advertising, Mr W. A. Waters, chief engineer to the Manaawtu-Oroua Board, stated that, when it was borne in mind that over £20,000,000 was sunk in tho electrical industry in New Zealand, and that the gross revenue ran into millions, it was apparent that power boards nnd electrical undertakings generally would have to adopt a policy similar to that of other traders in pushing their goods. There was no doubt that the public should ho educated more on the subject of the value of electricity. In New Zealand there wore only 7400 electric ranges, only one to every 200 of the population, whereas in Canada there were cities where there was one to every six. If an energetic campaign was jointly entered on—and proposals were on foot for this —he thought that nothing but good could result. Mr R. Sprague (Thames Valley) expressed doubt whether there was etnough electricity generated ita the Dominion to supply the demand which Mr Waters was hopeful of. Replying, Mr Waters stated that the Public Works Department would not lose time in catering for any greater demand. The chairman (Mr C. Campbell, of Invercargill) stated that it might be wise for all power boards to discuss the question of concerted advertising and then put their views before the Dominion committee sot up some time back. Mr Stephenson (Opunake) doubted whether some boards would he prepared to make any contribution towards joint advertising. Mr Waters further explained that it was proposed that the Public Works Department should find twofifths of the suggested advertising campaign, the supply authorities a similar amount, and tho traders the balance. Discussion then dropped, the matter being scheduled for consideration at tho annual conference of tho Power Boards’ Association.
