PRICKLY PEAR

STUDY OF ERADICATION

REMOVAL TO AUSTRALIA

NEW YORK, Feb. 1. At the end of 1927 Mr Lewcock, mycologist to the Commonwealth Prickly Pear Board, hopes to transfer his experiments with the bacteria he has discovered bearing on the study of tho eradication of prickly pear to Australia for tests under strict control. The bacteria ns closely akin to soft rot in vegetables, but is not believed to consist of tlie same bacilli. When p*ckly pear is infected with the bacteria during summer temperatures of 80 degrees or more, tho bacilli multiply at a tremendous rate, producing an enzyme which spreads with _ the greatest rapidity, destroying within a short time largo healthy plants, which seem to lack any natural resistant to this disease. The bacilli also spread from plant to plant by their own means. It is believed that this disease does not attack other economic vegetation, and while Mr Lewcock does not anticipate that it will completely eradicate the Australian pear areas, he thinks that it may prove an important parasite factor in stopping tho spread of the pest, and make possible its total removal with the aid of mechanical means at an economic cost. Mr Lewcock points out that one of the disadvantages of fungus diseases is that the pear creates a cork cambium around the spots infected with fungus, stopping its rapid spread, which is necessary if anything in the nature of wholesalo eradication is desired. Mr Lewcock also experimented with the mozaic disease of cactus, which is highly destructive to tho pear, but so little is known about the agent cause of this disease, that it is still problematical whether it would not spread to economic vegetation. The bacterial disease, which has been already isolated, has not yet been named. —A. and N.Z. cable.
