EMPIRE MIGRANTS
SECOND EDITION
CONDITIONS ON A SHIP. QUESTIONS IN THE COMMONS. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received March 30, 10.65 a.m. LONDON, March 29. In the House of Commons, in drawing attention to tho inter-depart-mental committee’s report making important recommendations in respect to migration, Sir P. Kmloch-Cooke asked if it was proposed to take any action to modify tho Dominions’ restrictions upon assisted passages. Mr L. C. Amery said tho report had been forwarded to the Dominion Governments, who must be the best judges of such matters. Tho whole question would be discussed at tho Imperial Conference.
Mr Day asked whether the authorities would hold an inquiry into tho allegations that tho Waimana that was used to convey migrants to New Zealand, was totally unfitted for the purpose, that 900 passengers were cramped into ill ventilated six berth cabins, and that there were only nine baths for the whole of tho migrants.
Sir R. Burton Chadwick said the Waimana had been surveyed and had complied with the regulations. Mr Day asked if Sir It. Burton Chadwick had received a complaint from 250 passengers that the ventilation was bad and the food abominable, also that towards the end of the voyago 2d was charged for a glas3 of water.
Sir R. Burton Chadwick replied in tho negative, but stated that if details were supplied he would have them investigated. Mr Gee asked if ho would get tho regulations altered. Sir Burton Chadwick replied that he was not aware that they were bad. They had proved satisfactory in many ships.—A. and N.Z. cable.
