GRADING OF CREAM
MINISTERIAL REPLY. NOT DEEMED SATISFACTORY. Recently, in the House of Representatives, Mr J. A. Nash asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he would introduce legislation this session for the compulsory grading of cream at all dairy factories. In a note to the question Mr Nash said that this system had already been introduced by numerous companies, hut they were unable to enforce same unless made compulsory by Act of Parliament. ,1 n reply Mr Nosworthy said that no decision had been reached, hut the question was to be gone' into at an early date. When speaking to the reply yesterday, Air Na.sh pointed out to the Alinister the urgency of the matter owing to the new sea-
son coming next month. “We are told to produce the very best article so as to successfully compete with the Danish market,” ho said, “hut we arc not being helped to do -so hv the department. At the present time some of the factories- have introduced grading, but, owing to legislation they cannot enforce it. If. sav, id per lb less were paid for second grade, then the supplier would immediately leave and go to another factory.” lie urged the Minister not to ■delay the matter; if he was not sure of the position, then lie should fake a plebiscite of all the factories, and he would soon know whether the proposal was necessary or not.
