The friends of Mr J. 0. Batelielar, uho recently met with a serious accident, will regret to learn that his condition is causing grave anxiety. The House oi Representatives yesterday granted 10 davs’ leave of absence to the Hon. W. Downie Stewart on account of illness.

At a meeting of the Wellington Education Board, yesterday, the resignation of E. M. Wake, assistant at Tokomaru, was accepted.

Mr James Watson, conductor of the Lithgow Brass Band (N.S.W.) has been appointed conductor of the Wanganui Garrison Band, and is expected to arrive in Wanganui next week.

Mr James Wallace and his daughter, Miss I. Wallace, returned to Palmerston North by train yesterday afternoon on their return from a nine months tour abroad. Tliev were acconipanied by Mr Wallace’s sister, Miss Jenny S. Wallace, of Scotland, and who intends to take up her residence permanently in the Dominion. A Press Association wire from Auckland states that Mr George Cutts, for many years starter for the Auckland Racing Club, died last night, aged 92. He was said to be the oldest surviving jockey in the Southern Hemisphere, and to have ridden his first race 81 years ago. Mr J. 0. Telford, of Eifeshire, Scotland, arrived in Palmerston North on Monday with his wife and family toitake np a position with the Premier Drapery Company. Ltd. Mrs Telford is an accomplished musician and she will prove a valued acquisition to local musical circles. At last night’s meeting of the Wanganui .Education Board it was decided to place on record the invaluable' services rendered by the chairman (Mr W. A. Collins) in the capacity of the board’s representative on the Girls’ College Board of Governors. Mr Collins will relinquish his duties in this connection at the end of the month, and Mr W. Adams, of Mangaweka, has been appointed to fill the vacancy. News has been received in Wanganui of the death of Dir J. M. Speed, who was fatally injured in a motor accident in Paris. The deceased gentleman, who resided on Durie Hill. Wani ganui, for some time prior to leaving on a world tour, was an old resident of Western Australia, where he had a big legal practice, and was at one time Attorney-General of that State. He was a brother of Mr Hugh Speed, of Wanganui. His many friends will regret to learn that Mr J. H. Claasen, of Bongotea, is at present a patient of a Palmerston North private hospital, having undergone a serious operation. At the monthly meeting of directors of the Rongotea Dairy Coy., Ltd., the resignation of Mr Claasen from the directorate after six years’ service thereon was received with regret and a resolution of sympathy with Mr Claasen and his family was carried. The chairman of the Wanganui Education Board (Mr W. A. Collins) at last night’s meeting extended a cordial welcome to Mr W. Adams, of Manga- . weka, who was recently appointed a member of the board. He said that for many • years Mr Adams was a teacher under the board and rendered yeoman service in the cause of education. He felt that Mr Adams was going to be an acquisition at tho table. Other members added their felicitations, and Mr Adams suitably replied. Mr J. J. K. Gilmour, of Dannevirke, whose , death at. Napier was reported yesterday, had been a resident of Dan-

nevirke for about 30 years. He was a bridge contractor, having built most of the bridges in this district (states the News). He: was of a cheerful disposition and very popular with all classes of the community. .At the time of his death he was a director of Dlessrs Neilson and Co., also of the Onakaka ironworks syndicate. Prior to the last municipal election Dir Gilmour was one of the borough representatives on the Dannevirke Electric Power Board, but

did not seek re-election on the last occasion. He was a prominent member of the Dlasonic Order. Deceased was twice manned and is survived by a widow and two grown-up daughters by his first wife.

The death took place at Taihape last evening of Mr Alexander Graham Morrison, only son of Mr Matthew Morrison, of Taihape. The deceased gentleman, who was 33 years of age, and an old boy of Nelson College, saw considerable service during the Great Mar. Enlisting with the Main Body, he joined the Wellington Mounted Hifles, and was with his regiment on Gallipoli. Invalided from that theatre of operations to England he was later attached to the New Zealand Hospital at Wnl-ton-on-Thames with the rank of quar-termaster-sergeant. Subsequent to his return to New Zealand he was married to Miss Gwen Whalley, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs E. H. Whalley, ot Palmerston North. The late Mr Morrison had been in a serious state of health for some weeks past, his illness arising out of a disability contracted tin war service. Besides his widow and father, he leaves an infant son of 2j years, and to the bereaved relatives will be extended the sympathy of their wide circle of friends.
