MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) At. the ordinary meeting of the Shannon Borough Council this week, there were present: His Worship the ' Mayor, Crs Thwaites, Roberts, Spencer. Dow nee, ‘ Hook, Richardson, Butt anil Curran. CORRESPONDENCE. From Valuation Department, replying to the council's request. for . a revaluation of the borough, that the ’ application will Ire considered. From the Dairy Company, asking for permit to build three-roomed house. From A. B. Hyde, asking for permit to erect dwelling. From J. 11. Roberts, applying for building permit. From Mr .T. Linklater, M.P., staling that the petition with regard to Shannon bridge had been presented to Parliament and biter it will be considered by Hie Petitions Committee. From 11. Pettit, asking for attention to be given to the entrance to his residence in Gray street. —Referred to road committee. From F. W. Newport. drawing the council's attention to his paying rates on StnnselFs drain and not receiving any ■drainage. The original creek has been completely filled in -for the road to pass over, which means that the water has no outlet whatever, only soakage through the land to the lower side. He asked that the council construct a culvert across Thompson street connecting the creek bed in bis property to the creek bed in the propertyopposite, which would relieve the stagnant water alongside his house. —Referred to road committee. REPORTS. The borough foreman reported that 94i yards of metal had been carted to Graham, Ballanee and Stout streets, Levin road and Vlimnier terrace, also he had cleaned out 40 chains of water-tables. Stork route posts have been erected, lie had inspected the waterworks and found everything in order. Several Councillors during tho last fortnight had been interesting themselves in trying -to solve the road metal problem and for their pains often hear themselves called some strange names. The committeo had viewed and carefully inspected a point in a property on East road. This would prove satisfactory for metal if arrangements could be inado to purchase. It had also viewed the rock full in the Valley road. This was a splendid proposition and with the necessary machinery would prove a lino asset to the borough. The committee mentioned that tho reports were brought down with the idea of assisting to spend the rates in as efficient, a manner as possible and to -attain greater results and all credit was due to those councillors who gave their time and labour in doing so. Tho library committee reported that 16 new members had joined tho library since the beginning of the financial year. Discarded volumes had been disposed of for the sum of 25s 3d. There was a quantity of books still remaining to be sold. The notico . board required repainting and this the committee proposed to have carried out. TOKOMARU. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The Tokomaru footballers were defeaied bv the Foxton team by 6 to nil on Saturday last. The monthly meeting of the School Committee was hold on Monday evening. Air R. \V. Guy was in the chair. Other members. . present were : Messrs McClure,. 'Titcombe, Schwass, Walton and Lamport!. The headmaster (Mr Hickson) reported the roll number to be 135. Attendances for the week ending June 12 wore 114.5; June 19, 121.6; June 26, lib: July 3, 115.6; and July 10, 123.3, these attendances being due to colds and bad weather. Owing to illness the headmaster was absent from June 26 to July 3 inclusive, and Miss Cruiekshank from July 7 to 10 inclusive. A resolution was passed against Bihle-in-schcools teaching. A reply was received from the Education Board offering a flag for 20s in place of tlie one provided by it 20 years ago; It was decided to procure a medicine chest for the school. Miss Wake’s resignation as from July 31m. was received with regret. It was- unanimously agreed to tender a social to Miss Wake on July 31st. Accounts amounting to £2 4s 111 were passed for payment. The visit of the school inspectors eventuates on Tuesday. A dance was held in Hie Makcrua school on Tuesday evening 'to procure funds to install electric light, in the school. As this ij the. only building procurable foe social purposes this light would prove a boon, and many residents showed their approval of the project by putting in an appearance. A pleasant evening was spent by all and the funds will benefit to an appreciable extent. Mr and Airs A. Judd supplied tho music, extras being also played by Miss Smurthwaito and Mr Russell. Visitors were present from Tokomaru and Shannon. On Friday next the dance in aid of the School Committee funds will be held. Mr S. Liggins has leased his farm and bis sale is advertised for July 20. At tho monthly meeting of the Ilorowhenua County Council Cr Whyte reported that, a small bridge near Alnkcrua appeared to be unsafe; also that there were complaints concerning Hume's road, and lie asked the engineer if something could he done to remedy matters. The engineer staled that this was duo to (lie heavy flax carting done last summer and metal was hard to procure. TIAKITAHUNA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A record crowd attended the Tiakitalmna hall on Friday evening last to witness the production of a Ihree-aet comedy. “Our Mr Ilopplewhile,” by a party of local amateurs trained by Aliss A. AI. Edwantes. The play was a great success and as a result the hall funds benefited to a considerable extent. Tho following was the cast of characters: Keturah, Countess of Lumberhurst, Airs D. Buchanan; Ernestine, Lady Bagley, Miss A. M. Kdwardes; the Marchcsa di- Candia. Miss Elsie AlcEwen, both widowed daughters of the Countess; the Hon. Jano Bagley, her granddaughter. Miss Laura Nielsen; Alias Adela Mucks, an Australian heiress, Miss Maud Nielsen; Airs Appcnzell, a picture dealer of doubtful reputation. Air L. Bindon; tho curate’s fiancee, Miss M. Nielsen; Eurl of Lambcrhurst., Air D. Rowland; tho Hon. Adrian Dalglish, his second son, Mr L. Bindon; Lord Bagley, Lady Bagley’s son, Air H N. McEwcm; Sir Nicnolan Pnrfitt, Lady Bagley’s cousin, Air AI. Richardson; Air Herbert Ilepplewhite. assistant manager at Holland Bros., furniture dealers, Air 11. Voss; Air Mothrop and Air Larper, sales-

men of Holland Bros., Messrs M. Richardson and G. Sorensen; Prill, porter of Holland Bros., Mr G. Sorenson; a curate, Mr J. Hawke; Granger, butler at Bagley Towers, Air A. Buchanan; footman, Air G. Sorensen. The players all carried out their respective parts very creditably, and the piny went with a swing from start to finish. A great deal of trouble was gone ,to in decorating the siage, and the scenes, particularly the one in the second act, were remarkably well arranged. After the play supper was served and later the floor was cleared for dancing which was indulged -in till the early hours of the morning. The thanks of tile hull committee are duo to the large, number of people who attended from Palmerston North and surrounding districts, the success of the evening being largely contributed to by their attendance.

Air E. V. Rogers it at present on a holiday visit to tho South Island The infant son of Air and Mrs B. Alorley, who has been an inmate of the Palmerston North hospital for some months with infantile paralysis, continues to progress and fortunately it wits not found necessary to send him to Rotorua for treatment.

There is at present an epidemic of severe colds and sore throats, due doubtless, to tho very changeable weather experienced of late.
