LIQUOR IN AMERICA.

ALLEGED ILLICIT DEALINGS. NEW YORK, July 13, John Madden, Mayor of San Silito, a suburb of San Francisco, has been indicted on a charge of rum running, and other officials of the municipality and the State Government are involved in this latest scandal, which is causing a sensation. Several members of wealthy and prominent families are also said *to be involved as suspected leaders of a gang engaged in illicit liquor dealings. The charges are the outcome of the recent blowing-up of a liquor supply ship, the Comet, and the killing the same day of Mae Garachi, the wife of a wealthy Italian. Her body was found on" the beach, which.was evidently the scene of a battle between rival gangs of rum runners.—A. and N.Z. cable.
