Received July 15, 11.5 a.m. LONDON, July 14. The miners’ executive has telegraphed to Mr Evan Williams, chairman of the Coal Owners’ Association, asking if his invitation to meet meant that the owners’ proposals would be withdrawn and negotiations could be resumed where they were broken off. It is stated that the miners prefer negotiations to a Court of Inquiry. The Mining Association telegraphed to the Miners’ Federation conference at Scarborough offering to meet representatives to discuss proposals for a new agreement, but declaring that the owners cannot withdraw the notices of termination of the agreemnt.— Reuter. COMMISSION OF INQUIRY. personnelTnnounced. LONDON, July 13. In the House of Commons, Mr Baldwin anounced that the Commission of Inquiry into the coal mining dispute would consist of Messrs MacMillan, P.C., W. Sherwood and Josiah Stamp. Mr Sherwood is the official negotiator for the National Union of General Workers. He is an authority on the labour conciliation question.—A. and N.Z. cable. MINERS’ DECISION. Received Julv 15, 9.50 a.m. LONDON, July 13. The miners’ executive has decided to withhold its recommendation that its delegates to the conference accept a coal mining inquiry, until it receives a reply from Mr Bridgeman assuring that the owners will - suspend, or withdraw the proposals and notice to terminate the present agreement if the miners co-operate in the inquiry. —Reuter. COAL FROM RUSSIA. BEING SOLD IN ITALY. Received Julv 15, 9 20 a.m. LONDON, July 13. A sidelight on the coal trade depression was shown by Mr A. M. Samuel in replying to a question in the House of Commons. He said that he was aware Russia was pushing her coal trade in Italy and other Mediterranean markets at what he believed, were unremunerative prices.—A. and N.Z. cable.
