SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL.

(To the Editor.) Sir; —The ratepayers and residents of Palmerston North will doubtless remember that, some four or live months ago, their attention was drawn to a proposal to temporarily deviate the railway to permit of the erection of the Soldiers’ Memorial in the geometrical centre of the Square. They will also recollect that a largely signed petition was submitted to the Minister of Railways to invoke his assistance to prevent such deviation, but that lie replied that he had no power to interfere, and that it was a question for tiie citizens themselves to deal with.

A number of representative citizens thou requested the Mayor to call a public meeting to consider what further action should be taken and that meeting lias now been called for Thursday next at the committee room in the Municipal Chambers (next to Ail Saints’ Church) at S p.m Every person who is interested, and especially those citizens who signed tile petition, and who desire the prevention of the proposed temporary deviation of the lailwav in the Square, should therefore attend the meeting, as this is their last opportunity to enter a protest against the proposal. — 1 am, etc., W. L. FITZHERBERT. 13th July, 1925.
