NEW GOVERNOR-GENERAL.

AFPOINTMENT FOR AUSTRALIA. MELBOURNE, May 18. Mr S. M. Bruce, Federal Premier, has been officially advised that the King has appointed the Right Hon. Sir John Lawrence Baird to succeed Lord Forster as Governor-General of the Commonwealth. —Press Association.

EMGLISH PAPERS’ COMMENTS. LONDON, May 10. The Daily Telegraph states that Sir John Baird’s appointment as Govern-or-General of Australia was a surprise to ais colleagues in the House of Commons. His name was submitted along wit’ i others to the Commonwealth Government, which selected Sir John Baird.

The Daily Telegraph says editorially thab the Governor-Generalship is not an affair of mere pomp and circumstance, nor is iS ft famous name or ancient title demanded, but the Dominions do need men who have studied problems which disturb the Empire and the world. Mr Bruce and his Government and the people of Australia have in Sir John Baird one- whose opii lions will be well informed and valuable —one who will not be likely to ignore the lessons of the Old World or underestimate the demands of new conditions. The Morning Post commends tho appointment in view- of Sir John Baird’s practical knowledge of Austin ian problems and his reputation as an administrator. The Post adds that tieie pro-consulships are no longer tho sole responsibility of any Government department at Home; they are really appointments made jointly by the Colonial Office and the Dominion concerned.—-A. and N.Z. cable.

Horn in England in 1874, Sir John Lawrence Baird has had considerable experience in the diplomatic service anc. served as an Intelligence officer in the European War. He was Parliamentary member of the Air Board, 1916-18; Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Royal Air Force, 1918, and Parliamentary Secretary of State, Home Office, 1919.
