THE FRANKLIN SEAT
MR J. N. MASSEY NOT A CANDIDATE. DECLINES FOR PRIVATE REASONS, Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, May 20. Mr J. N. Massey, in reply to a deputation, stated that the Massey family were Highly honoured by the request that he should contest his father's seat at Franklin, hut private affairs absolutely forbade his entrance into politics at tho present time and nothing that the deputation could say would alter his decision. He had had to refuse tlie earnest request of his mother, who had said that Franklin was the best electorate that ever a man had desired and that his duty was to keep the Massey name associated with it. He stated that he could never forget the gi’eat tribute paid to his father and his gratitude was deeper than he could express. Replying to a deputation at Papakura, Mr E. D. McLennan said that he regretted exceedingly that Mr J. N. Massey could not contest the Franklin seat. He had decided to allow his (Mr McLennan’s) name to go before the selection committee. Mr McLennan is a resident of Papakura, residing on the farm where he was born. He has held office on a number of local'bodies, agriculture and industrial associations.
