GUARDIAN DEATH ADDER.
SECRETARY’S PRETTY PET.
BETTER THAN POLICEMAN. ADELAIDE, May 4. Mr Alfred von Doussa, a well-known former member of Parliament, and exsecretary of the Onkaparinga Racing Club, celebrated his 77th birthday last week. He caused a stir among his friends when, in the course of his reminiscences, he referred to a faithful silent servant which he had had for many years. It was a dentil adder. This reptile, he declared, had been utilised as a protection against robbers, and his handbag, containing money, had never been carried unless the little snake was inside. No thief had yet risked putting his hand in the bag, ho said.
Mr von Doussa opened his bag carefuly, and a pale-coloured reptile, about two feet long, was disclosed nestling among some papers. “I feed it on milk and a few small insects,” he said. “It is also fond of mice.”
