UNSEAWORTHY SHIPS.
HINDUS ALLEGE SWINDLE. i APPEAL TO AMERICA. SIMLA, Aug. 23, A remarkable memorial has been prepared by the Karnani Steamship Company of Calcutta, and forwarded to Mr 0. E. Hughes, Secretary of State, at Washington, U.S.A. . The' memorialists claim that in November, 1919, on the strong representations of Mi 1 J. A. Smith, then United States Consul-General at Culcutta, the Karnani Co. agreed to purchase certain wooden vessels from tho American Government. These vessels, the s.s. Gray Cloud and the Brookhavey, later on proved to be quite unseawortliy, and not insurable. The company therefore, held that Mr Smith had misrepresented the facts. The memorial also complains of undue delay in the delivery of the vessels, and appeals to the American Government to pay the losses, amounting to 160,716 dollars (£32,143) which the company suffered. The memorial states that many poor Indian shareholders invested their money in the concern, believing that the venture was backed by the American nation and Government, •
