FORTY-FOUR HOUR WEEK.
LOSS OF EFFICIENCY. SYDNEY, June 9. The Minister of Works produced official records showing the effect of the forty-four hour week on the cost of rock tunnelling for sewerage works. With the forty-eight hour and six-day week in vogue, each man excavated 5.02 cubic yards at a cost of 32s 6d. When the forty-four hour and fiveday week was instituted, each man excavated 3.02 yards at a cost of 43s 7d. The Minister says that unless the lost efficiency is regained work cannot bo continued at anything like a reasonable cost. —Press Association.
