FREAK WHEAT.
NEW CROSS DISCOVERED. The discovery of a new cross of wheat has been reported from Weddiri View, Mr John Murray's property, between Forbes and G'renfell, says the Sydney Sun. Tho crop from which the sample was taken is old Federation, but a reinarkable feature is that the stalk is of the Purple Straw variety. It is more than likely .that the new cross has been brought about through inoculation by bees. Some of the sample straws have as many as. three or four heads, and some of the beads contained up to 220 grains. Out of a crop of 350 acres, grown on the property of Mr. J. Shaw, only a patch of about half an aero is composed of this freak wheat. It is expected that, a-Very heavy • yield .will be obtained from this half-acre, and the grain'will be saved for experimental 'purposes.'
