Arthur Henry Hums was chargecP'with bigamy. it was shown that the accused hud married a Maori in 1912, hut u’us .subsequently separated from her. He later met a European girl, whom he married in November, 1917, saying that he believed that his first.wife was dead, information to this effect having been given him by the Mauris with whom she had been living. Accused in his evidence said ho firmJv believed his first wife was dead. ‘ A verdict of guilty was given, and the Judge ordered him to come up for sentence when called upon, on the conditions that lie took steps to annul the f‘, rs t marriage and did the right thing bv marrying the girl to’whom he had done such u grievous wrong. He was also' ordered to pay CIO, the costs ol the prosecution.
