News of a. shocking state of allairs . among the cattle on hauler by Island—- | one of the Auckland Islands group—has .hetni brought to Dunedin by Mr 0. i Angus, second engineer of the Rachel Cohen, -which returned to the Bluff re--1 ecu lly from the Aucklands. Some years , ago the island was stocked with cattle, the number of which has increased to such an extent. Mr Angus states, that | many of the animals die of starvation, while all are in a weak, emaciated state. , The island is four miles long, and one ' mile broad. It has little vegetation at 1 any time, and little water. For the former the cattle have formidable competitors in rabbits, which are numerous. | As the island is heavily overstocked the I cattle can only live and die'.miserably, says Mr Angus. Some of them, ho asserts, wade into the sea and eat the kelp. There' arc skeletons in all direc--1 tious. The few trees ou the island afford very little shelter. In their: desperation a number of the cattle have swum to Rose Island, a quarter of a mile distant, but according to' Mr Angufi, fs'ctl is j list as scarce there, while of water there is practically uouo.
