KOSY THEATRE.
“THE CELEBRATED SCANDAL.” The dangerous extent to which the uses of gossip may be put by the unscrupulous is the basis of the new box film. "The Celebrated Scandal,” shown for the first time at (lie Rosy Theatre to-day. The scene of this picture is laid in Spain in high political circles, and a power hi I plot i, handled with rare skill. Anxious to repay a debt, Hon Julian invites tlie handsome young Ernesto to stay with him. Tim invitation is accepted, although his wife, Teodora Julian, objects. By win. of rewngi gossip Is started, and (lie name, of Teodora and Ernesto a:v i reqnently coupled. Don Julian is jeered at in con sequence, and is ultimately druen to desperation, although In* is convinced ol his wife’:; faithfulness. The story comes to a tragic end. The leading role, that ol Teodora, is. taken by Betty Nansen, a Danish tragedienne, who is ideal in the part. Tim same may-be said of Mr Edward Jose (Don Julian) and Wiltmilh Merkyl (Ernesto). The acting and photography throughout are of a high si a nil - nrd, and the whole picture is in keeping! with the splendid Fox films (hat have preceded It. In disenssinsg the undoubted merits of this programme, Mr Bennett, general manager “1 Palmerston Pictures, Ltd., remarked that -Betty Nansen was ouo-tinto the leading European actress, and it was considered the greatest achievement in the moving picture world when tin: queen amongst, tragediennes, v.'no bad the world at her feet, was induced to act for the pictures. Her first introductions, were “A Mol herbs > Sacrifice’’ and “Princess Elena’s Prisoner, produced by, the Nordisk Cm, of Copenhagen, and shown by Mr Bennett a low years ago in Dune, bin where the people of the southern cirv went "Betty Nansen mad,” just as the people of to-day have done towards M;,ry Bickford. Til addition to the Fox film, a good selection ot comedy, topical and scenic could not fail to make an impression.
