SMALL VOTING ON LOAN. | (Per Press Association.). LWIiJRCAR'GILL, Feb. 24. A poll of ratepayers was taken to-day on the proposal to raise a special loan of £52,001), including £16,291 for street and drainage' work, £3124 for. street widening, £1535 for beautifying Waihopai and reserves, £3OOO for land and plant at the corporation quarry, £4750 for fire brigade plant, land and. buildings, £3OO for underground conveniences,. £IO,BBO for harbour reclamation, £4120 for jetty and approach, and £750 for gas works, plant and extension. An outstanding feature of the poll.was the small public interest taken in it, and at 2 p.m. there were less than 140 votes re- ; -cfjidt-*!.' ■ One of the eight polling ; places at 1 p.m. had not recorded a single vote. In the afternoon, however, a section of the ratepayers appears to have' remembered the circumstances of the loan, and the poll clerks were given just enough work to coun-tor-'.cc the languorous effect of the Ilea*,. In all, out of 3959 ratepayers [ on th- roll, 481 recorded their votes. i Th 3 result, announced at 7.30 __ p.m. ' to a bare twenty people, was: 325 votes ■ for tlif proposal and 155 against, there being one-informal vote.
