Harvey, the New South Wales wicket keeper, the last of his side to hat; started well, but was bowled by Pegler at 11, the innings closing for 436.
Pearse and Commaillo opened for South Africa to.the'bowling of Minnett and Kelleway. At four, Emery in the slips badly missed Pearse off Minnett. In the.next over Kelleway missed 'Commaille in the same position; in the fourth over Massie repeated the performance, while another went between two men, making four chances missed in four overs. The batsmen then settled clown, and played carefully, taking 65 minutes to score 7. Emery was the most expensive bowler. After a spell Minnett again bowled, and Bardsley, fielding at first slip in place of Massie, caught Commaille in his first over. Minnett followed this up by, in his next over, bowling Faulkner, who hit on. At 54 Pearse, whose innings had been flukey, miss-hit Emery to Macartney at point, who held. He had batted 85 minutes and hit seven fours. The century appeared after 100 minutes' play. Snooke seemed confident, and with Nourse brightened _ play somewhat until ho was brilliantly caught by Minnett in the slips off Kelleway at the fatal 13. Sinclair followed, and started sensational batting. He hit Minnett, who kept the other batsmen quiet, for 28 in two overs. The second century appeared for 163 minutes' play. Sinclair's batting delighted the crowd, it being a treat to witness after the other slow players. Even he took 70 minutes to score 65 before being bowled by Massie. He hit ten fours. Nourse gave his first chance at 78, when a hard cut from,Minnett to Bardsley atpoint was missed. A couple of overs later Emery bowled him with a well pitched ball with a leg break He batted 153 minutes, and his' eight fours.
Schwarz was also a victim to .the unlucky-13, being bowled by Macartney. New South Wales' ground fielding was good, but the catching was wretched. N.S.W.-First Innings. Somerset's proposal to allow five points,for a win iit;.-> completed match , and three for the leaders in the first innings if the match is riot completed, The Committee also adopted Surrey s 'proposal not to allow trial balls if both batsmen are at the wickets. The Committee postponed consideration of Yorkshire's proposal for limiting County matches to two days.
