THE TAONUI TRAGEDY.
The inquest on the victim of the Taor.ui dynamite explosion took place in Feilding this morning, before Captain Mowlem. District Coroner. After hearing the evidence offered, the following verdict was returned by the j llry; —"That the deceased, Ferdinand August® Hasse. met his death at Taonui on °March 19th by an explosion, presumably by dynamite, but. there is no evidence to show how the explosion occurred." The letters found on the body were as follows: — _ , „ "Ilalcombe, Fob. Bth, 1909. Well, Fred, I can't say much. Come at once. Dansfcr. * "Halcombe, March 16th, 1907. Dear Mother, Brothers, and Sisters.—l am sorry to leave you, but as is quizzing me of a thing I never done, I am going to another land. So good-bye to all. I remain, your brother, F. HASSE. p.S.—You will find me in a hole of water in Halcombe not far from my grandfather. I will tell you the hole is where I get this It is all through - at Halcombe. —F. lIASSE. The following is evidently intended for a will:—"March 16, from Fred. Hasse. —I owo Charlie, my brother. £20. So I give him this money which is £8 17s 6d, and the horse that I left at Mtingawoka, as I have not paid him for the horse, and from Bailey Bros., A;eh. and Alf., get for fencing 60 chains at 4 shillings per chain, my share is £21, and I have drawn £12 10s. So I have vet to como £8 10s, so give it all to my brother Charley Hasse, of Taonui, and the tools that Jack Ryan and I won in Mat's which half of them to me, jyeksaw, wedger, 2 axes. —1 his is i hrough ,»f Halcombc. So good-bye to aiil." .
