AN INFANT'S DEATH.
iO — DEPLORABLE STATE OF AFFAIRS Per T'rnco t\aonr»ia+'nn. DUNEDIN, March 18. An inquest on the body of William Vivian Gorrick, aged four and a half months, who died in the Karitane ■ Home on Saturday, was held yesterday. The evidence disclosed a deplorable state of affairs, showing that nine per- ' sons were living in a throe-roomed ! tenement, Avhich was described by a I medical witness as being in an indescribably filthy condition. The child was born on November 24, and was taken to a home in Forth J Street, where it was fed on humanised I milk for fifteen days. The child was afterwards taken to its mother's home, where the humanised milk treatment was continued, but the child was subsequently fed on cow's milk, mixed with water and with Neave's food. The reason alleged for the change was that the child did not thrive on humanised milk. The jury returned a verdict to the effect that death was due to acute ijidigestion, produced by improper' feeding. The opinion was also expressed that insanitary surroundings had contributed to some extent to the child's death.
