The Metal Committee reported that the draft agreement with the Athletic Parle Company with respect to the supply of metal had been approved and adopted.—Report adopted. The Cemetery Committee reported with reference to several minor matters in regard to cemetery management and upkeep.—The report was adopted.
The Public Works Committee reported that it met on the 2nd inst. and made the following recommendations: — That the tender of J. Hocking, j£B96, bo accepted for the Kawau drain work, subject to arrangements being completed to enable the work to proceed. Minor details in connection with specifications for work to be done at the Hokowhitu were considered and approved of. Some modifications in the original scheme were agreed to. The action of tho Mayor in accepting the tender of J. Jones for pipe carting was confirmed.—Adopted.
A meeting of tho Firr Brigade Committee was held on tbo 2nd inst. It was reported that the Committee had asked the Engineer to report, at the request of the Brigade, as to improving the ringing apparatus. A letter from the Brigade with estimates of expenditure for 1906-07 was deferred for the present.—Adopted. The Opera House Committee met on the 3rd inst. It was recommended that tho whole of recommendations made by the caretaker from time to time, and published as made, be referred to the Engineer, with a further recommendation that the Engineer be instructed to carry same out at once, that the Council alter the charge for autumn race week by making the two race nights £10 each and the remaining nights ordinary charges only; that the time for the provision of curtains, suggested by Merry weather and Sons, had not yet arrived. —Adopted. Inspector Perry reported that during the pnst quarter he had received six notices of infectious diseases in the town. The conveniences of some of the hotels had not received necessary attention and the fact had been impressed upon proprietors. Very few complaints had. been received as to the nonremoval of rubbish. The area was increasing owing to the extension of building, and there were only two carts to do the work. Tho whole of the town was attended to in nine or ten days. The Inspector also reported upon the recent parade of vehicles. A number of the new sewers had been smoketested and found satisfactory, executing a few cases. Several connections were being made by householders.—The report was adopted
The engineer reported that as the season was approaching when the usual mtumn and winter repairs to roads will lave to bo undertaken, he suggested that ihe 2600 yards of stones now in No. 1 jit be broken to 2in. gauge for use on inain roads and streets, the cost, includ;ng breaking, carting and spreading being ibout £400. This, together with ordiniry face metal for outside and secondjlass streets, will keep allin good order through the coming winter season. As soon as the weather will allow of the work being done, he proposed to cut the grass ridges away from the sides of metalled roads by means, of the road planer, for which purposes it will be necessary to strengthen the machine and give it increased weight to withstand the strain put upon it. The design is right, but it requires to be improved as above, therefore he suggested that this be authorised. As previously arranged, Cr Bryant, of the Ivairanga County, together with his Worship the Mayor and Crs Sinclair and Stubbs, of this Borough, paid a visit to Fitzherbert bridge and vicinity, with the view of fixing the boundaries of protection works to be carried out in the future, when it was arranged that at the eastern side of the river the area should extend from two chains below the bridge to the bluff up tne steam. With regard to the western side of the river considerable discussion ensued, and he had been instructed to inspect the place indicated by Cr Bryant. This he had done, and could not agree with the suggestion made ; therefore, he recommended that tho area on the town side bo from two, chains below the bridge to the up stream end of the present ..planting near the | rifle butts. It was agreed that the sheet; piling protection at Fitisherbert end of the bridge should be carried out as arranged some time ago by the two Councils, Tho delegates aJso suggested that j debris collected at several piors be re-1 moved and iron braces fixed at tho first! pier from the Fitzherbert end, and this j is now being done. He had inspected Ituahine street as directed, and found that to roughly form \watertables, road and footways, and to metal tho roadway 10 feet wide will cost over £100. , This will bring the street up to the standar4 of Edgeware road and Wellsbournestreet. The time for calling tenders for annual supplies has arrived, and he suggested that this be done.—The report was adopted with the exception of tho portion relating to Ruahino-stroot, which was referred to the Public Works Committee.
