WELLINGTON, April 3.
Returns received by the Mines Department shew that the export of gold from New Zealand last month was 35,2810z, of the value of £143,338, making a total export for the three months of the present year 129,6980z, valued at £523,859; as compared with 125.9570z valued ut £500,189, for the first quarter of last year. The Arbitration Court has made its award in the furniture-makers'dispute. There are over a hundred firms concerned in the districts between Wellington, Napi£r, and Patea. A week's work is placed at 46 hours ; competent cabinetmakers, upholsterers, chair and frame-makers, machinists, wood-carvers and turners shall receive Is Bfd per hour, and polishers Is 3d. No piece work is permitted. The preference to Unionists clause in the old award is retained. In the enginedrivers' award 48 hours is retained as the time tor a week's work, except where otherwise expressly prescribed, and the minimum rate of wages is retained practically unaltered; but the new clause provides that firemen engaged in firing only, where no certificate is required, shall be paid 7s per day.
