No civilians were present. § The prisoners, who belonged to the Ethiopian Church, spent the night praying and singing hymns. , r They confessed their guilt and expressed regret to Mr Fryer, Yicar of j Richmond, who accompanied them to the execution. . Before starting the" prisoner? were, brought to the Courthouse, where Colonel Weigh ton read the sentence, and the Governor's confirmation. The prisoners showed no fear, and respectfully saluted the Bench. A guard of two hundred police escorted them to the valley. The firing party consisted of police. Death was instantaneous. Immediately after execution the bodien were buried in a trench. Three head chiefs, and one hundred Xndunaa- witnessed the execution and were much impressed.
