Quarterly Returns.

Tho following is from tho quarterly return of business transacted at tho local S.M. Court:—39 sittings have been presided ovor by tbo S.M., and 25 by J'a.P. Tho S.M, heard a total of 444 civil cases, the aggregate amount sued for being £MBO 9s sd, and tho aggregate amount recovered JG2405 17a. 40 applications .wore heard and 86 orders were made (other than on judgment summons}. 560 plaints WJire - entered, 65 distress warrants issued, 54 judgment summonses issued, 11 orders made on judgment summonses, and 1 warrant of committal issued. 580 summonses and other processes were served by the bailiff and assistants, 67 distress warrants executed,: and 2 warrants of committal. The amount of. civil fees paid was £825 17s, and of licensing fees £6165. Very little business was done by the District Court sitting "'in Palmerston during the past quarter. Of civil cases, 1 was commenced, 2 heard, 2 lapsed, and 1 is still pending. In bankruptcy, 4 petitions were filed by debtors, and 8 by creditors. The amount of fees paid in stamps in bankruptcy was £44105, and in other prooedure it was £2 18s.
