Borough Prosperity
The town of Palmerston North still shows signs of atsslute solvency and prosperity, judging by the Borough records. On the 31st March only five ratepayers were in arrear with their rates, the total sum amounting, to £15 lis 6d. Of this sum over £10 is in dispute owing to Supreme Court cases, and may, be fairly held uncollectable at present, while the Council holds an order on wages for nearly £3. This leaves less than £3 uncollected which might have been recovered by legal process. The total rates of the Borough were increased last year from #11,171 to £13,307, made u p of increases of interest ou new loans, extra water sun-
plied to new buildings and extra charges for sanitary work, la addition to this the ratepayers have paid over £1600 for new footpaths, mostly the last Council. Daring the year over £400 was paid for building permits, showing also that money is not so scarce as it is believed to be. Last yeas the Borough held the record for the Colony with a clean sheet as regards accounts owing, and this year with a little over iilo.it should hold a good place. k
