Opening of the Bowling Green.
Though the almost continuous rain during the past month has effectuallyprevented play, advantage was taken of the comparatively fine weather prevailing this afternoon to. formally open the bowling green. This was done by Mr H. Haydoj , President of the club, who expressed the pleasure it gave him to see so many members present and regretted the greens were' not in a .fit condition for play. Still he was glad of the opportunity of opening the green because sooner or. later they would be able to start play, a great deal of enthusiasm had been shown by members so far, they were continually rushing down to get games when they had no business to do so, and they were opening the season under very favourable auspices, except so far as the weather was concerned. They were stronger numerically, and they had no financial embarassments. Thanks were due to the committee and directors of the Bowling Green Company for the manner in which they had endeavoured to get the green in order. Referring to improvements effected during the season, he said they would all regret the absence of the macrocarpa trees, but he thought present intentions, which were only in then- infancy, would greatly improve the appearance of the ground. Regret was expressed that the state of the weather prevented Wellington and Woodvillle visitors present from getting a game but he hoped they would visit the green later in the season. Mr Haydon concluded by expressing his hopes for a successful season. The jack was thrown and the ceremony concluded with cheers for the new season and the visitors.
