Accidents and Fatalities.
According to information supplied to fche Taranaki Herald, it is surmised that Mr M. Aylwaru, of Warea .(New Plymouth) who was gored to 'death by a bull last \?ednesd'ay lay down towards noon in. the paddock where die was working for a. rest, as was his custom when out working in the fields. He was spoken to by Mr Burgess, an adjoining settler, about an hour before the dead body was found- 'Ifae deceased apparently lay down under the shade of a tree, am/d while asleep he must have been attacked by the bull, which was grazing in the paddock* with the usual chain attached to him. The theory is borne out by the fact that there are blood marks on the ground to the fence where the bon> was found, a distance of some 150 yards. The body bore terrible gore marks. One eye-was gouged out, and part of the: cheek bone torn away. There were also terrible lacerations of the cCiest and groin. Part oE the chain attached to the 'bull was found aear the body. It is surmised that the bull gored deceased and carried him on Ms horns for the 150 yards, or after the first attack by the infuriated beast toe deceased got tangled in- the chain, and was dragged to the pjace where the 'body was found. Most of the clothing on deceased was torn to ribbons by the attack of the ■hul.l. Mr Aylward was a great favourite in the district, being of a jolty disposition. Mr W. H. Smith, manager of the Frimley orchard (Hawke's Bay), met^with a nasty accident on Thursday morning. While yarding some horses, the horse he was riding- fell dead under him. Mr Smith' was■ thrown heavily, and rendered unconscious. Dr. Barcroft was at once summoned, and upon examination stated that Mr Smith had sustained a slight concussion of the braiin, besides' being badly riruised, but that no bones were broken. Mr Smith regained consciousness in about an hour, when ho was removed to his own house, and is now progresaing satisfactorily.
