TELEGRAPHIC NEWS.
(Per Press Association.) Chbistchurch. March 18. About 150 persons attended the meeting held this evening to consider the state of the Colony's defences. The speakers were the Mayor, the Hon. H. Wigrani, Hon. C. C. Bowen, and Messrs G. Laurenson and W. W. Tanner, M's.H.R. Mr Laurenson.criticised the defence of Lyttelton very severely, saying the armaments were quite obsolete and practically useless. A motion was proposed, "'That in view of the present position of affairs in Europe and the East, this meeting urges the Government of the colony to strengthen our defence, more especially with, regard to the principal ports and the coalfields." This was rejected and'the followiug motion was carried : —"That this meeting is of opinion that the Government should appoint a Royal Commission to inquire into the state of the Colony's defences." ■Tijiaku, March 18. The Premier visited Temuka to-day -Heavy rain fell and spoilt a somewha/ pubiic but he was welcomed by the^Maj'or and the chairman of .the .Road Board. The Premier made a brief speech in reply. He is being entertained at a banquet this evening.
