DEATH OF SERGT. GOURLAY AND TROOPER CONNELL.
Eeceived February 16, at 9.30 a.m. Sydney, February 16. Eeferring to the fighting at Eensberg, the Cape Times publishes a telegram stating that the distinguishing feature of the skirmish on Monday was the pluck and courage of Captain Madocks and the New Zealanders. TERRIBLE BOER FIRE. On Monday morning the enemy commenced to open a desultory fire on the Yorkshire and New Zealanders, who had a picket on the hills north of Slingersfontein, the fire increasing in vehemence until it was one continuous roar, preventing our men from even looking out. CREEPING TO THEIR FATE. Under cover of their fire a number of Boers, about 200 strong, were creeping up the hill, taking advantage of every piece of cover. v .'';■ YORKSHIRE CAPTAIN FELL, i Captain Orr, of the Yorkshires,. fell ( badly wounded and a few men also fell. OUR CAPTAIN RALLIES THE YORKSHIRES.- ' Captain* Madocks, hearing the heavy fire on the Yerkshire side, rushed up and found the men -wavering. ;He immediately gave the order" to fix Bayonets and charge. The effect was magical and the Yorkshires rushed forward. BOERS DIDN'T WAIT. The Boers, however, did not-wait for the cold steel.iSut fletfindisorder, falling as they ran to the splendid shooting of our men. THE NEW ZEALANDERS CHARGE. Captain Madocks then rusked across to his own men, calling on them to follow. They charged down hill, shooting as they ran. FELL IN A GALLANT CHARGE. Trooper Connell and Sergeant Gourlay fell here. 40 BOERS KILLED. The Boers loss is estimated at 40 killed. Twenty-five bodies could be counted, as the enemy made no pretence to bury their dead.
