A WEtcrKGTON paper m its article dealing with the 1 old year and the new thus writes : — New Zealand has had to bear her full share" of the world's depression, and looks eagerly for spijie break m the leaden clouds which have so long overshadowed her most prominent industries. The Old Year has closed with, many indications, of »' better times coming." Our principal productions '-stibw signs of improvement m prices and de maud, and our manufactures are untnis-. takeably m the course of extended and accelerated de veloptnent. Whatever maj r be the ultimate: decision of the country upon the large and speculative policy propounded by the Colonial Treasurer/,^ there is little doubt .that a vigorous and progressive policy/ if at this same time reasonably moderate m its dimensions and fairly safe m the provisions a^aiflst maladministration, will command public support. With, the virtually unlimited natural resources of this Colony, and the resolute and practical character of its people, there is no warrant for any doubt as- to the 'future. The return of prosperity connpt be long deferred, and the sooner we all learn thoroughly the lesson of selfoeliance, of self-help, and of selfdenial/if need be, tlie more ; quickly arid permanently will the restoration of that prosperity be accomplislwd.
