HOT-AIR ENGINES.

By the last English mail the Standard sent Home an order for a hot^aii* engine, a comparatively new motive power which lias been found very serviceable in smaller industries. The engine alluded to is very simple in its construction, and in cost of fuel i* exceedingly economical compared with steam. The cost of the engine itself is high, but the saving in risk, less danger of fire, diminished insurance, and decreased cost of fuel more than compensate for the extra original cost of purchase. The hot-air engine will tuke the placo of the four-horse-power steam engine now driving the Standard printing machine, which is considerably more power than is required. It is probable that as hot-air engines get to be better known they will almost entirely supersede pteum in cases where the power required is not great, an.il where freedom from the unpleasant smell of grease within confined limits is a consideration. The Standard hotair engine will be the first introduced in the North Island, although we learn that other industries will probably adopt their use when it is appareut that they are the serviceable motive power which it is claimed they are. In the features of absolute safety from accident, and economy of working, the engines ih question ai'e said to be unsurpassed, and are superior even to water engines. ■A, looal agent fbiv the district will shortly soon be appointed, from whom all particulars as to price, manner of erection, management, power, and the. special advantages claimed for them can be obtained. The hot-air enginp for this office is to be delivered by the end of May or the middle of June next.
