Gold at Tuhua.

! A FRIENDLY CAUTION. ITo the Editor Wanganui Herald.] a ra __l hear that a Maori named Hone Paiaka has been spreading reports and making statements about a goldfield supposed to exist at Tubua j stating that he hai just come from that locality, and describing a vast land slip that he says has lately taken place m tho ranges thr-re, uncovering gold m quantities, nuggets, &«,, besides bringing talfeht a rich gold bearing "quartz f eef, several feot thick m the underlie. That • gold does exist at Tuhaa , is more than probable. " T have had some personal experience m gold fligging, alluvial as well as reefing, but I venture to say thnt no alluviaLdigging8 i 4m be "found to exist at Tubua. The country is mountainous,; and the Natives of those parts, who lately shot Moffat, if not now hostile, are scarcely friendly, and would certainly turn back prospectors un•leiVthey were invited by Piku and other chiefs. I speak advisedly,; as I have been, and am, m communication with these, men. Hone Paiaka is a notoriously bad and mischievour character, an outcast, from his tribe, and to my certain know* ledge has not been at Tohua for years. , For the Jast six or seven months,., he has been living at the Kukuta, near Mr Ken-, nedy's, at Upokongaro. The probability is that if he showed his face at the inland •ettlements he would run a good .chance of being tomahawked for his treacherous conduct. He is a clever, plausible fellow; very dishonest, and a kin X of r omancers.v Fbrwaysthatare dark and thought a that are mean, the heathen Chinee is a fool to Mr Hone Paiaka.— l am, &«., McDonnell. ! The Ferns, Wanganui/ Sepk 3rd.' P.S.-—I have but little doubt but tha,t; the Tuhua natives will open the-cduntry' to prospsctoM soon if all goes • but to go up there now, with Piaka's recommendation as an introduction, would perhaps end m the whole party being chucked into the river— T.MoD.
