Arch-Bishop-Vaughan.

fPostJ The late Archbishop belonged to a very ancient and honourable Herefordshire family. The deceased Primate was the second son of Colonel Vaughan, of CourtfieW, Herefordshire. He was born m 1834, and educated first by private tuition and afterward at the Bene* dictine College, Downside. He entered on bis novitiate m 1853, went to Rome m 1856 to complete his divinity studies and m 1859 was admitted to the priesthood by Cardinal Patrici m the Church of St. John Lateran, Rome. Subsequently he laboured very successfully as a missionary priest m the West of England, after which he became Professor ot Philosophy m St. Michael's Benedictine Institution. At the early age of 28, he was elected to the Cathedral Priorship, am? ten years later he was appointed coadjutor to the late Archbishop Polding whom he succeeded on the decease of the latter, m March, 1877. The late Archbishop Vaughan first arrived m Australia 10 years ago, and soon won the cordial esteem and respect of all classes of persons of every shade of religious opinion. His abilities and scholastic acquirements were of a very high order, and he was remarkable for his liberality of thought and judiciousness of action. His loss Will be. deeply felt, and we are not surprised to learn that the melancholy news has, been received m Sydney with universal regret.
