An alteration is made m the advertise ment for -tenders for sleepers for the Sandon-Carnarvon tramway, m .per-, initting either split or sawn sleepers to be tendered for. Dr Turner, of Samoa, has written the thirty-seventh report of his institution at Malula for the education of native ministers. The institution consists of 68 thatched cottages laid out m a square, at one Bide of which stands the hall. Each cottage is the home of a student with his wife and family. It is surrounded with a garden, the produce of which maintains the household. Whilst the student is. being trained as a preacher, his wife is qualifying as a teacher. At the present time 230 ordained pastors are at work m the Pacific Islands who have received their training at. Malula. An enterprising London publisher has just issued a work, '-' Yes" and" No," or " Thirty-five Ways of Popping the Question." The examples given of the manner m which this momentous duty has been, undertaken are extracted from the works of English novelists. The Oarterton Observer hears on good authority that Mr Lister«Kaye, who has been missing from his home and »vas supposed to have been drowned, has turned up m Melbourne, where he is enjoying the proceeds of a recent legacy left to him! Holders of publicans' licenses ought to bear m mind that they must give notice of intended applications for renewals at least twenty .-one days prior to the annual licensing day m June next. The following advertisment appears m a Riverina newspaper :— " Wanted, — A. cultured gentleman, capable of milking gonts. A university man preferred. Applications, with testimonials as to proficiency, to be addressed," &o. The Wanganui Chronicle gives currency to the rumour that the sawmillers of Kangitikei and Manawatu who have not entered into the arrangement of which the new Wanganui Sash and Door Factory Company was the result, are about to form a trade combination of their own, with a view to regulate the prices of timber, and other matters. There is a good story told of the late Baron Solomon •de Rothshield of the Vienna House. "His son who greatly patronised cabs, was m the habit of giving the drivers about five times ,the amount to which they were entitled. One day Baron Solomon hired a cab and tendered the legal fare. Much obliged said cabby; but your son gives, us three four, five and even six times as much. Ah said the Baron he has a, rich father ; I haven't! In consequence of some accident to the coach, (particulars of which have not reached us), Foxton was not reached last night nor m time to catch the morning train. Probably to-night will see last night's mail deliyered, though itis scarcely probable that this morning's mail -will reach Foxtou by train time. All this should be obvirated when the iron horse connects Wellington with New Plymouth. We are requested to intimate that a telephone station has this day been opened at Ashurst. Proceedings for divorce have been taken by a leading firm of solicitors m 1 Wellington (say's the Post) on behalf of Mr. Parker, farmer, of the Hutt, and the case will come on for hearing at the next sitting of the Supreme Court, There are two correspondents m the action, both of whom are at present residing at New Plymouth, one of them, : it is said having been cohabiting with the respondent for some tim* past. The parties were married m England about 17 years ago, and resided together m New Zealand for a considers able period. The divorce is applied for on the ground of adultery. A welUknown legal firm have been retained by the correspondents. The action is said (o possess features of considerable interest. Philadelphia has been greatly excited over the capture uf a band of grave robbers who arere caught with six bodies 1 , intended for the Medical College, m their possession. An investigation shows that these ghculshad almost cleared one of the cemeteries of its occupants. The recovered corpses hay" been identified. Their capture was planned by seme newspaper reporters attached to the Philadelphia Press, who carried it out successfully as amateur detectives. His shop is really a gallery ot art , and some very choice specemens of the sculptor's handicraft decorate his windows. He is agent for several specialties, and his business embraces a number and variety of lines that should ensure a very extensive business connection.
