It is likely that Parliament will ba asked to vote a sum of two thousand pounds lor the representation of the colony at the Calcutta Exhibition. Mr Redmond has left for Brisbane. A long spell of fine weather has been experienced here. Mklbourne. Sir B. O'Lcghlen denies Mr Gilli-s's statement m refprence to the condition ot the railway finances, and characterises them as fallacious. The libel action, Rev. Dr Jacobson v. Julius Matt hews, resulted m a verdict for the plaintiff for £300. Evidence for the defendant corroborated the defence set up that the plaintiff, while filling the office of Rabbi, acted contrary to the law of the Jewish Church. Mr P. S. Andleton, the Minister of Justice, has been returned unopposed, 'i he Harbour Trust request that the Government will introduce an amending Bill to authorise the Trust to borrow a million for carrying out ira. portant public works.. Mr G. R. Johnston, architect, has been awarded £2581 by the Supreme Court on account of the Hawthorn accident. . Victoria has been allotted an inferior position at the Amsterdam Exhibition, and means are being taken to improve it. Brisbane. The Premier, while travelling between Gootchie an Maryborough, narrowly escaped a serious accident near Tiaro station. The train, going about twenty miles an hour, swept round the bend on a long bridge. After going a few yards on the bridge, one pair of wheels of the tender left the track and travelled 100 yards over the bridge and ] 50 yards on the other side across the sleepers before the train could be pulled up. Fortunately no damage was done. Three Fr ncbmen have arrived on the Rockhampton coast from New Caledonia. They state they are free men. They subsisted for some days on shellfish and grass.
