The accounts from tliß country as to the effects of yesterday's north-wester are that a lar^e quantity of gram is lost, to the value of several thousand pounds. Jt is said .that m. some parts after the' gale, on resuming reaping it was feund that the straw was quite brittle, breaking m th\ binders. -In some places there is nothing but straw left. Rumors have been generally current to-day of further destruction of mills by fire, but they have turnei out untrue, although there was much difficulty m suppressing the fire round • the mills. The loss m many directions^ especially to small settlers, must be serious. .Auckland, March 3. A runaway express broke the corner of a cast iron stand of a verandah m G-oodson's Arcade this morning and the adjoining verandah collapsed. The damage ia estimated at &2QO. Owing to the early hour no one w*s nnderneath the verandah, otherwise there would probabjy have baen a loss of life. At the Board of Education a refolutibn - was passed that* teachers interfering directly or indirectly with the election of school committees or of the members of the board would render themselves liable to instant dismissal. Instances of the kind were quoted. ....... Westpokt, March 3. Wm. Fagg, an early resident of Wellington and an old West Coaster, died.to-day of apoplexy and paralysis. Mrs Graroatica and John JDavjd&on still remnin m gaol here. The* latter's trial for attempted suicide/ is; fixed for the 13th instant at the District Court. Blufp, March 3. Two 'English men-of-war, theEsphigle, six guns, and Diamond, fourteen guns, passed through the Straits this after* noon, bound to the eastward. ■"'-
