THE OTAGO CENTRAL BILL DEFEATED. Contarary to all expectations, the Otagd Central Railway Bill was thrown out early this moaning, on the motion for the second reading, by a majority of 10. The following amendment has been agreed to by both Houses : —'' The council of any . borough or county may apply any portion of the borough or conuty funds respectively towards defraying the cott of exhil ition of any articles they may desire to send as their own exhibits to the Dunedin and South Seas Exhibition ; such cost may include all expenses of transport of articles to and from the said Exhibition, the payment of rent for space occupied by such articles therein, , and the cost of care of such articles during the whole of the Exhibition." | Dunedin August 23 ! THE OTAGO CENTRAL. I The " Star's '" correspondent says:—" I I learn from a Minister that the vote taken last night on the Otago Central means throw* ing a great many men out of employment. The new railway works proposed would have provided employment for 1000 men at least, besides which many now on must go, including at least 20 officials in the Public \\orka Department—clerks, overseers, etc. Mr Pyke is very sore, and declares he will block every measure which concerns the votes of the opponents of his pet scheme. SELECTORS' REVALUATION BILL. , The Waste Lands Committee this morning passed the Selectors' Revaluation Bill without amendment, excepting that on the motion of Mr Ballauce it was made to apply to village homesteads and special settlements. FRIENDLY SOCIETIES. The Premier said Government had under consideration the desirability of appointing during the recess a Royal Commission to inquire into the whole subject of friendly societies. Later. EWEBURN RESERVOIR. I find that iu answer to Mr Scobie Mac kenzie's question re the Water-race Trust the Premier said that he was introducing a bill to ameud the Local Bodies Loan Act, and that he would try to introduce it as a clause in that. ' Latest. LORD CRANLEY'S RECOVERY. This afternoon- letters were read by the Speakers from His Excellency the Governor, thanking the members for the addresses of congratulation'forwarded to him by both Houses yesterday on the couvalescency of Lord Crauley. CHRISTIE v. WARD. When the whole question as between : Judge Ward and Government is disposed of. the Premier promises to consider whether the costs incurred by Judge Ward in defeuding the action commeuced by Christie against him shall be paid by Government. If Government come to the conclusion that the action against him was a frivolous one, they will probably pay the judge's costs. CONFIDENTIAL CIRCULAR. The Minister for Defence stated today that the confidential circular issued from the Defence Office to officers commanding districts was not meant to cast any reflections on the volunteer force. Th» volunteers will probably ask what it did mean. KUMARA SLUDGE-CHANNEL. The discussion on the report of the Goldfields Committee on the transactions iu connection with the Kumara Sludge-channel commenced at about half-past four. Mr. Seddon entered into a lengthy explanation of the history of the affair, and was speaking at the dinner adjournment.
