THE BEACH ROAD.

IX VERY BAD ST ATI

CYCLE TRACK PROTO,BAI

Air A. Alsou referred to the very |, u «l state of the 'Beach Road at Thursday evening’s meeting of the Foxton Chamber o.t T omniere-e. The surface was in a particularly bad state at present. he said, and t'.as acting to the detriment of the resort. lie considered that the sealing of the road, which was a subsidiary highway, should be urged and as an alternative a proposal submitted to the, controlling authority for the construction of a cycle track to the beach. There was a good deal of hike traffic over the road and a track' would he a great asset. It did not necessarily need to be a bitumen track as clay would serve the purpose. The Mayor (Mr M, E. Perreau) said the idea was a good one. Quite a lot of people were now using the Beach as a place of residence and a track would serve a useful purpose and be a decided asset. Air W. Robson said that it ap-

peared as if W’Vuterere was becoming a. serious rival to foxton Beach. He had noticed that large parties of Paliiatua residents were visiting this resort who previously patronised the local beach. He did not know whether the bad state of the road lmd anything to do with this. It was stated that at Wuiterere motorists were always sure of being able to drive their cars out on to the ocean beach without

trouble which was an added at traction. At Foxton there was always an uncertainty and foi the greater part of the year the track to the ocean beach was impossible. The President (Mr F. C. Raikes) referred to the manner in which the Foxton Harbour Board had taken up the tar sealing proposal and said that the two members of

Parliament on the Board had investigated in M ellington the possibility of having the work prosecuted hut without any success. It did not appear as if there was. much hope of this woitk being carried out until the main highways were sealed. The cycle track suggestion was a good one, however. -■ It'was decided to write to the Foxton Harbour Board, expressing the Chamber’s, appreciation of its efforts to have the Beach Road sealed and to offer the cycle track suggestion for consideration. It was also decided that the President and Messrs A. Alsop and M. E. Perreau wait on the Manawatn County Council in connection with this matter.
