ANTI-ASIATIC LEAGUE.
A branch of the Anti-Asiatic League has been formed in Foxton. The aims and objects of the League are to restrict Asiatic immigration into the Dominion, in order to preserve racial purity, and to safeguard the nation’s morality, etc. Further, the league aims at patriotism by urging its members to support European tradespeople as against the unfair competition of the Chinese. We agree with many of the League’s planks, but the question of alien prohibition is for our Statesmen in Parliament and the Home Government to decide. It is a national subject. However, seeing that the Chinese are admitted to the Dominion, they are entitled to the protection of our laws, and members of the League should set them an example as law-abiding and honest citizens and treat them with British fair play. If the League is to do any permanent good, it must see that its members do not make fools of themselves by annoying the Chinese residents, otherwise public sympathy will veer round. We are reliably informed that one or two hoodlums, after last night’s League meeting, deliberately annoyed a Chinese lauudryman. We are confident that the League’s officials were not aware of the conduct of these irresponsibles, and we ask them to investigate the matter. It is our duty also to direct the attention of the police to the disturbance.
