SEDDON MONUMENT.
Tenders to be Called immediately. The Government intends calling for tenders immediately for the monument to be erected over the grave of the late Mr Seddon on Observatory Hill, overlooking Boulton street cemetery, according to the design prepared by Mr Campbell, Government architect. The monument is to consist of a column and pedestal standing on a base of three steps, the bottom step being 23ft square and the top one 14ft square. The pedestal is to have a height of 16ft from the ground, and the column is to be 33ft in height above the pedestal. The shaft of the column is a square, and measures 4ft 6in on each side, tapering to 3ft loin. The necking has a moulded and foliated capital, and is surmounted by a symbolic stature 10ft in height. The total height of the monument is 59ft from the ground. The pedestal has four square buttresses on the angles with curved trusses on the top, each surmounted by a lion recumbent. The morumeut will be constructed with a core of ferro-concrete, and faced with New Zealand marble or granite. The pedestal has panels which will admit of suitable inscriptions and over which there are carved festoons, one having in plain letters the word “ Seddon.” Tenders are returnable within a couple of weeks, and it is expected that the work will be completed within four months. Owing to its large size and prominent position, the monument will be discernable from the whole of the harbor and many parts of the city. It will be massive and well proportioned., though without elaborate detail.
