THE THAW CASE.
Declared Not Guilty.
New York, February 2. The : jury returned a verdict of not guilty; in the case of Harry Thaw, charged with the murder of Stanford While in the Madison Square- Garden Theatre in June, 1906. This decision was arrived at on the ground that Thaw was insane at the time he committed the murder.
The Judge, deeming it dangerous to the public safety that Thaw should be discharged, ordered that he be confined in the Matteswan Asylum for an indefinite period.
Judge Dowling, in summing up, emphasized the lact that only such a defect of reason as would make him unaware of the nature of his act or that the act was wrong would excuse Thaw of the responsibility for the crime. The jury were eleven hours in deliberation on Friday and took fourteen ballots before they reached an agreement. The jury cheered Thaw’s wife as she was motoring to the Matteswan asylum: Mr Littelton, Thaw’s counsel, has decided not to take action at present to hinder his committal to the asylum. .
