SIZE OF THE ARMIES.
SURPRISING FIGURES
"It came as a surprise to many,' says a London journal, "to learn from Captain Guest's answer to Sir Frederick Hall that the mobilised atirengfch of the British Army immediately before the ooiiolusion of the various armistices' was greater than that of any other airmy:, either enemy or Allied, tho British figures being .9,68Q.247i. as against 5,075,000 for Erance, 3,420,003 for Italy, 4,500,000 for Germany, and 2,230,000 for Aus-tria-Hungary. The British and French figures include, of course, colonial troops, of wKom we have apparently 700,000, a,nd the French a^ million. Another inteiiasting fact isthat the four Allied Powers —Great' Britain", France, Italy, and America, —had a numerical superiority over the Central Powers and their two allies'of more Mian- 10,000,000 men, tho figures of the former being 37,882,379 and for the latter' 7,630,000.
