SYDNEY, July 4^ The annual report of the Comptroller of Prisons shows that the total number jf convicted prisoners received in the gaols during the year was 8077, being on in every 1874 of the population. This is the lowest number on record, and is 365 less than for the previous year. The number of convictions in the Police Courts during 1918 was 5528. being 276 less than'in 1917. The principal cause of the decline was the great improvement in the social and economic conditions of the people. .
