EDUCATION BOARD.

"The monthly mooting of the VVellin«'ton Kducation Board was hold on Wednesday last, tho raombors present being: I''ho Hon. J. G. W. Aitk«a (chairman), Messrs G. London, P. kuhivortli. T. Forsyth, RMcCallum, M.P., K. H. Penny, A. W.Hogg, 1. Moss, and \V. H. Field, M.P, Leave of absence was granted to Messrs \V. AllaJi and J. Kebbell. The financial statement showed payments during the month according to Government regulations (teaencr.s • salaries, etc) £10,983 14s 3d; general payments (administration, salaries, etc ) £4827 3s lid; cash in bank (13th July) £1426 9s 2d; amount on deposit £11000; Government grants now ' du~, £8774 3s Bd. Expenditure to .date (curent year) £6205 8s sd. Estimated cost of works authorised, not yet completed, £5211 12s 6d. * The request of the Rapaura. Committee for tho enlargement of the ■teacher's residence was declined mvan< T to the age of the building making suet- work inadvisable. The Boards architect will, however, visit the place in a week or two, and lully consider tli3 question. A grant of £160 towards the cost ol aj school bailding at Wantwood was intimated, and the authorisr.tion ot the amount hits been advised to the settlers ther-3. Th> Board, however, considered the authorisation too ■small, and decided to appeal again to tho Department for a further sum dn aid. . Mr W. I)'. Pike was' on tne nlotloll of Mr B. H. Penny), seconded by Mr McCallum, appointed as tho representative of the Education Board on the Board of Governors of the Marlborough High School. i . The alteration of t\w mmc of Okiki IBay (Polorus Sound} School to Finners Bay was authorised. • The'question of holidays in the Marlborough ward was referred to the secretary and inspector, with power to' arrange suitable terms to suit the geographical circumstances of the district. The request of the committee- at Picton that Miss -Macalister and Miss M. Harris be promoted was agreed to, and it was decided to • re-advertis© the position as assistant there. The announcement was made that the chairman was retiring from educational activities as a member of the Bbaid. Mr A. W. Hogg moved a ■vote of very hearty appreciation, and •was supported by cash member of the Board pr-33-Jit. ■ The conspicuous ability and courtesy with which Mr Aitfcen has filled the chair has greatly facilitated the business of the Board, which is of considerable magnitude. In reply the retiring chairman spoke in ■•warm..terms of praise of the staff of the Bj)i£rd, and alsj stressed the ex■cellenS';tvjvk done by th? inspectors. Ho considered that if ever Parliament «?isaolve'd tho Boards it -vould be a grave and serious eror. They wero doing excellent work, and could do better if-not so much fettered by Departmental procedure.
